The straight answer

More living space without adding a room

Most people who call about a patio cover are not really asking for a roof. They are asking to be able to sit outside in October, cook outside in March, and let the kids out the back door without everything getting soaked.

The engineering question that matters here is load and water. A roof over an outdoor space has to shed a lot of water and hold up under whatever the season throws at it, and it has to attach to your house without letting any of that water in.

That is why this is a build, not a product. Where it attaches, where the support posts go, and where the water goes are decided on your patio, with you, before anything is ordered.

What we work out on site
— Where it attaches to the house, and how that stays dry
— Post positions, and what they land on
— Slope, and where the water actually goes once it is off the roof
— How it will affect natural light, and how much light you want to keep
— Whether it covers an existing slab, an existing deck, or both
— Whether lighting or electrical needs to be coordinated
Where they go

Three ways people use a cover

Materials, roof style, and colors are walked through on site, against your house.

Over the patio

The most common version. A concrete slab that was a summer space becomes a nine-month space.

Over the deck

Covering an existing deck changes the loads it carries, so the deck underneath gets looked at as part of the job.

Outdoor kitchen and dining

Where the cover is protecting equipment and furniture as well as people. Lighting and electrical wiring get coordinated as part of the plan.

How we build it

Six things we get right on a cover

01

The attachment is a waterproofing detail

The connection to your house is carefully planned and sealed to keep water out where the patio cover meets the house.

02

Posts land on something solid

Footings or existing structure are checked so each post has the support it needs for a solid, dependable build.

03

Water is given somewhere to go

Slope and drainage are planned before the roof goes up, so water has a clear path away from the covered space.

04

The deck underneath gets assessed

Covering a deck adds weight to it. The structure underneath is assessed first to make sure it can properly support the patio cover.

05

Permits pulled where required

A patio cover is a structure. We confirm what your jurisdiction requires and handle the necessary permits as part of the project.

06

Electrical gets coordinated with the build

If you want lighting, it is planned into the build from the start so it fits cleanly into the finished patio cover.

Budgeting

On price

A patio cover is priced by what it has to span, what it attaches to, and what is underneath it, which is why two covers of the same square footage can be very different numbers.

We quote after a site visit, in writing. Our minimum project is $5,000.

$5,000 project minimum
What moves the number
— Span and square footage of the covered area
— What the posts will be supported by, and whether new supports are needed
— Condition of the deck or slab underneath
— Drainage, and where the water has to be taken
— Whether lighting or electrical is being coordinated

Per-foot pricing does not tell the whole story. We walk the property, understand the project, and then give you a clear written price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we get asked

Do I need a permit for a patio cover?

A patio cover is a structure, so a permit is commonly required. Specific requirements vary by jurisdiction. We check what applies to your property, and we pull the required permit.

Can you cover a deck you did not build?

Yes, and part of the job is assessing what is underneath. A cover adds weight, so we check the existing deck structure to make sure it can properly support it.

How much light will I lose?

Some, and how much depends on the design and which way your yard faces. It is an important trade-off, and one we talk through with you while standing on your patio.

Can you build the deck and the cover at the same time?

Yes, and it is usually the better order of operations. The deck can then be built with the size, weight, and placement of the patio cover already planned.

What exactly does the lifetime workmanship warranty cover?

It covers installation quality while the original customer owns the property. If a problem results from improper installation or workmanship, we repair it at no labor cost to you.

How long will the build take?

It depends on the size and site conditions, so we will give you a realistic timeframe at the estimate based on what your specific project requires.

Is there financing?

Financing is available, including 0% options on approved credit. You can apply online before your estimate, so the visit can focus on what you want built and the options available.
